Rick- I'm looking for a new computer that I can use for graphics. Do you have any suggestions on processors and monitors? I'd love top of the line, but I'm afraid I have a middle of the road budget.
I'm using photoshop mainly and want a widescreen monitor, but I'm not sure what would be best.
I'm working on an emachines W3615 Pentium 4 and its as slow as heck.

I've always heard that Machintosh was good for graphics-related work. So I'd say, look for an Apple iMac. They're priced competitively.
However, if you don't want to have to learn the ins-and-outs of a Machintosh and deal with the compatibility issues, then obviously you'd have to look for something else.

Look at Dell, they have a good mix-- I buy 100's of them a year and have very few problems.
make sure you have lots of memory 4gig. that will be the one thing you can do to make sure you have decent speed.
From what IMP says--I find that not to be true anymore. there was a time where Macs were better at the graphics than PCs. but I'll match a PC against a mac any day.

If you want to build one your self this looks like a good deal. make sure you know what you need to complete this: cpu cooling system, Floppy drive (If you choose) DVD- drive/burner Video card- the one on the mobo is crap.
it is a good place to start though rick

I love Dell. I rarely have any problems with them and when I do, it's usually not the computer's fault. lol
Edited to add: I have an inspiron 1720 and I love it. It has an Intel Centrino Duo inside and it's super fast. However, I'm sure something faster is out on the market now.

Thanks Rick,
I thought that it looked pretty good. I have some of the other components that I need (drives and vid card) and I can pick up the cooler on the same order if I get this.
BTW I now have laptop envy.
TOm.

It's the way that the machines handle the graphics. Windows still has a bunch of hoops to jump through... requiring graphics accellerators or more video memory to do the same thing a Mac was born to do. Yes, it's true you can beef up a IBM Clone and have it match Mac's video... but the thing is you have to beef it up first. But hey, if I had to choose, I'd pick the IBM Clone anyway due to the software compatibility issues.

I know our people at the school use PCs instead of macs. we will have to ADTD, because with a standard PC (today) and the same software, I can match everything I have seen on a mac.
I agree on the software part though, there is much more software around for the PC.
