I am looking for a good digital voice recorder, that doesn't cost a fortune, and has alot of recording time. Any suggestions???

There are many many to choose from. I will let Rick speak to the benefits of one brand over another, but I will tell you that you can find 16mb recorders for a reasonable price. Another tip that I have been given is to get a microphone for your recorder. It can help to eliminate background noise. (I will also confess that I have not yet used a microphone on my recorder, but I now have one to use at our next investigation.)

price range is a big thing. I have heard that the anolog recorders do better with EVPs. I ahve used my mp3 player as a recorder and it works quite well.
Quick questions:
are you expeing to copy the files to a computer? If so how? do you need digital? did you consider a mini tape device? Do you have an external mic?

I don't really want to spend more than $100.00, if possible. I've been looking at a few on e-bay that were in the 75-80.00 price range, and they had alot of recording time. I want to be able to copy them to my computer. And I do not currently have an external mic. Which is better, a digital recorder, or a mini tape device??? I'm new at this!!! Thanks

There are many who believe that analog devices are better for picking up EVP's and (they believe) harder to fake or alter.
In the end it is up to your preference. I would say that, if it makes a difference in your choices, pick the recorder that will also be useful to you outside of paranormal investigating.

Personally, I prefer digital over the analog tape types. For one, you don't have to worry about tapes. I hate having extra parts to mess around with. Plus, being digital, you just copy the file over directly to your computer and can send it with minimal work to all your friends. Plus, if you are going to want to remove all the background noise, it can be done with the proper software. I use Goldwave for cleaning up the noise off my audio files. You can get a trial version here: www.download.com/GoldWave/3000-2170_4-10107438.html?tag=lst-0-1It has this real neat feature. You mark a section of your recording where nothing is happening except for the ambient noise, and then remove that particular noise from the entire recording. This really helps to make other noises outside of that ambient noise more legible. You know what I'd do if I were you is I'd go to www.epinions.com and check there for recorders in your price range that have high marks from the customer reviews.

the audio software is very important. I use adobe Audition. It is probably the best at what it does. (TAPS uses it so it must not be too bad). I am going to put together an audio guide (how to check audio) shortly.
goldwave is good if you have a limited budget. I think it is around $40. Audtion is around $300.
There has been a lot of dscussion on which capture format is better. The analog (tape) has had the most success. IT has been used for EVPS and people have had a lot of success.
the Digital formats are easier to work with, they can be moved from the recorder to the computer in a very short time. the anolog will take the same amount of time that you have recorded.
One last quick comment--If you have an MP3 player (Ipods may work with an add on) check to see if you can record audio. I have used mine a couple of times and have had ok results.
