As part of our goal to help you check your evidence, I wanted to explain how I process the audio files. I use adobe audition to work with the files.
First: I make a copy so that the original file remains pure.
Second: I split the stereo file file into two mono files. This has more to do with the way we record than anything else. We usually have two or three Mic's set out.
Third: I open the file and check for any hot spots, parts of the file that may be really loud. any of those areas have the volume reduce by 10 db and checked again. I keep reducing the volume until the noise is normal.
Fourth: I increase the volume of the entire file by 10db until I can hear things clearly.
Fifth, I split the file into segments of about 15 minutes or so. I try to look at the file and see if there is a quiet area so that I don't lose any on the keep sections. I'll listen to the area several times before I split the file.
Sixth: after splitting up the files, I'll spot check them just to see if everything is as I expect. I then upload them to the file server and make burn everything to CD/DVD.
