Robin and I have been to Gettysburg several times. It is a wonderfully maintained historic area with conveniences for the tourists and travelers. I highly recommend a trip whether you interest lies in Civil War History, Paranormal occurrences, historic villages or just a nice place to visit.
From July 7th through July 9th Robin, Bill and myself were in Gettysburg for Bike Week. Not exactly a paranormal meeting but as always we took time out of our weekend to check out the battlefields and take a tour with a registered guide.
If you take the bus tour spend the extra $4 to go on the tour with a registered guide. You will get a lot more information and if you ask questions they will tailor subsequent information to you.
In addition to Devil's Den, which is reported to be on of the most haunted places in the U.S. (though neither Robin or I have ever experienced anything there), we learned that amongst the battlefields that belong to the national park there are several farm houses. These house belong to the National Park Service and are inhabited by Park Rangers. They are charged with maintaining the farm houses they live in as part of there ranger duties. Our guide is not one of the rangers that lives in these farm houses but he did tell us that if he were offered a house he would not take it. He said he has heard too many stories from others who live in them about "things that go bump in the night."
Once again, no paranormal experiences this trip, but with it being so close, Robin and I are always up for a field trip to this historic battleground.
Tom.

From the Evening Sun.com serving Greater Hanover and Gettysburg. Gettysburg ponders how to handle ghost toursThe Evening Sun By MEG BERNHARDT Evening Sun Reporter The Gettysburg Borough safety committee spent most of its meeting Monday trying to figure out how to handle a growing number of ghost-tour companies. The borough sent letters to 13 walking-tour companies earlier this month after a Baltimore Street resident complained to the committee about litter, noise and trespassing outside his house. The letter sparked six people from three ghost-tour companies to come to the committee meeting. And they acknowledged some companies cause problems in the town and don't follow voluntary guidelines intended to mitigate concerns. "There are some tour companies with grandiose opinions of themselves who are doing whatever they please," said Cindy Codori Schultz, owner of Sleepy Hollow of Gettysburg. The borough formed a ghost-tour subcommittee in 2004, which agreed on guidelines instead of strict ordinances to regulate the tours. Since then, the number of ghost-tour companies has grown and borough officials worry not all of them are following the guidelines. "These are the good operators who take the time to come here and speak with us," said committee member William Monahan. But Monahan said if the problems are not solved, an ordinance regulating the tours might become necessary. He said if that happened, it would be a long process because the borough would need to gather input from the ghost tours to make sure regulation would be fair and work well. The committee also said it would consider whether to require that all amusement-permit holders carry insurance. Currently, walking tours must obtain amusement permits and contribute 10 percent of ticket sales to the local government. They must also follow the borough's sign ordinances and Pennsylvania traffic laws, but there are no requirements they hold insurance or follow the safety guidelines. In the letter sent to tours, however, the borough said violating the sign, sidewalk or licensing ordinances could result in the borough suspending or revoking an amusement permit. The borough also said in the letter that limiting group size to 20 people was one of the guidelines, but at the committee meeting chairwoman Holly Giles said that was a clerical mistake. No limit was ever agreed upon. Still, the borough is stepping up its watch on the companies. The Borough Council asked code enforcement officer Bea Savage to start spot checking the tours on nights and weekends. Last weekend, she went out Thursday and Friday night. In her report of the visits, Savage suggested guide companies change routes to stand in front of businesses closed at night instead of residences if the houses can still be seen from across the street. She also said some tours were crossing the street outside of crosswalks, especially if the street appeared quiet. But it could be a problem if a driver comes through fast. "You need to make a believer out of the guide because it's a safety issue," Savage told the committee. Gettysburg Ghost Tours owner Mark Nesbitt said he planned to send a memo out to his guides telling them of the suggestions. Cathy Leap from Echo Tours said she felt her company was obeying the guidelines. In other business: ¥ The committee discussed moving 10 parking meters from the 100 block of South Franklin Street and instead requiring residential permits there. On average, those meters make only $4.88 per month, said parking manager William Little. The borough can place the meters in a spot where they can make more money. The matter will be decided by the Borough Council. ¥ The committee decided the parking garage will not charge a $5 event-parking fee during weekday matinees at The Majestic. ¥ Savage is coordinating an effort to help property owners in the 3rd Ward clean up graffiti on private buildings. She hopes to work with the juvenile probation program to make it a community-service project. Contact Meg Bernhardt at mbernhardt@eveningsun.com. GUIDELINES ¥ Guides are required to wear badges that include the names of the guide and company; ¥ The groups should be organized and out of the streets; ¥ No trespassing on private property; ¥ The companies must follow all sign ordinances. Looks like its getting overcrowded with ghost walking tours. The visitors bureau, the Farnsworth and a couple other center of town places have been conducting ghost walking tours for years. I would recommend those over the newcomers.
Robin and I have seen this happen in Salem, MA as well. People set up these ghost walks to cash in and the guides and information are usually sub-par. Not that every new tour group is bad, but the ones who have been there for a while most likely are run by those who care about their history and community.

I found a picture of an alleged 'headless ghost' from Gettysburg. Looks like he has a head to me though. Doesn't look much like a ghost either. Probably just some dork on another tour who unwittingly got caught up in the picture. But anyway, check it out here: www.coasttocoastam.com/gen/page1559.html

i have been to gettysburg about 50 times in the last 4 years and i could show the group if needed all the best spots to conduct a hunt, i know my way around there better than i know my own town lol. Gettysburg has become my life and passion. i go in the bloody triangle field and sit in the center for hours by myself and take it all in. i get a lot of EVPS there. i also play old civil war music which seems to work better for evps.

IF we go in the off season nov-may the rates in most hotels are like $50-$70 a night. it takes me about 2 hours and 15 minutes from Wilkes barre. depending on how many people go we can car pool. i have a explorer and a scion. i could fit about 5 in the explorer. the rooms i think are two queens per room. i did all the ghost tours and it seems like there all the same story and they only take you around town a little. i like to go to Sachs bridge in Getty where they hung deserters. i get a lot of energy there. devils den, the wheat field and the bloody triangle field to name a few. and culps hill is a EVP haven. with me you would not have to hire a tour guide. but i have to check winter park hours there diff. from summer hours. unless i gain permission. or is this Gettysburg trip more geared for this spring or summer. the one guide i know from the farnsworth house said activity picks up between sept. and dec. but that could be all haunted places. just let me know. i am just excited to find people who have my passion and interest. i want to earn the groups trust so i can do some house investigations with you. thanks gettynut93.

I have been to Gettysburg numerous times and have even met and talked to Mark Nesbitt, the author of Ghosts of Gettysburg. I have stayed overnight in the Farnsworth House and even had a strange experience there. I have been on all the "old" ghostwalks and can offer up some info on Gettysburg. If you are going, let me know. Thanks
