Please feel free to elaborate on your choice after you have voted. Sure, a lot of you might say all of the above but I didn't put that up there, did I?
That's my sneaky way of making you post your actual theory since the poll will mostly likely not have a 100% answer for you.
We all found each other because we are interested in finding evidence of paranormal activity, so let's discuss why?

I voted for the "People who were too attached" answer though I believe that many of the answers are just as likely. I nearly voted for the "Too afraid to move on" answer.
The reason I was torn between those answers........ Because that's me. I'm very attached to this world, mostly because it's the only thing I've ever known, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick around, at least for a while. The reason I almost picked "too afraid" is because I know that there are people, like me, who are very apprehensive about the unknown. One of the main reasons I am involved in this is to find out the "why and where for" before I have to deal with it personally.
Also ghosts can be Creepy.

Actually, quite a few of those answers could be correct. So I can't pick one over another.

I can't pick one. First of all, I have no idea what they are... and as far as I know, there really isn't any solid scientific proof that ghosts exist. But I follow the theory that hauntings come in a variety of flavors. - The recurring haunt - this is a sighting or sound that happens the same time of night, or the same time of the year. I don't think this is spiritual in nature. I think it is a scar on the fabric of reality that shows itself by replaying an instant in the past for us.
- The visiting relative - This could be one of two things. In the situation where a person has died recently, and there is a sighting of that person by a loved one before they knew the loved one has died that this could actually be a ghost coming to say their last goodbyes. Perhaps even over the next day or two. But the farther you go from the actual instance of death, the more likely that the cause is more psychosomatic in nature - the mind's need to find closure creates a hallucination to make good.
- The poltergeist - this active and sometimes violent haunting is a telekinetic event. No ghost is ever heard or seen. The theory is that it is normally caused by subconscious emotional activity of a young teen in the family, usually a girl.
- The malevolent haunt - I feel these types of hauntings are not what used to be human, or at least they haven't been human for a long time. I think there are creatures that defy our laws of physical reality, and that they are usually really upset about something - or just downright mean and nasty. Some people call them Demons, others associate Shadowpeople with this sort of thing. Doesn't really matter. I think whatever they are, they are smart enough to know what scares us, and that gives them the power they need. These are probably what typically empower those Ouija boards that we all know so well. These type of hauntings usually have something that can clue us in to their nature, such as foul odors, paranormal climax at 3:00 AM, ghosts that are physically wrong (like missing their eyes, nine-fingered, or other mutation from the norm), among other things.
- The restless spirit - There is a belief by some religions that if you are obsessed with life, you are doomed to repeat it. This is where reincarnation theosophy comes into play. Buddist monks spend much of their time detaching themselves from life-long obsessions in order to finally separate from this existance to elevate to a higher level of being. By the same token, it could be said that if someone were obsessed enough with something in life, perhaps they would not release hold of their last life enough to progress with whatever comes next. This person needs to be released from their obsession in order to find rest from their haunting prison.
- Hallucination episode - yes... sometimes the people are just letting their minds get the better of them.
Well, that's enough for starters, huh?

Wow! All of your theories do have some validity. So once again, this tells me that a "ghost" can be many different things, depending on the type of haunting. The more I learn, the more it seems to me that the majority of "ghosts" people see are residual haunts, just replaying history and not even aware of their surroundings.

While I had a hard time picking just one cause I felt that a few applied, for the sake of the poll I chose...... And I didn't want to make tom feel bad that no one wanted to participate in his poll.............

Decided that you needed to bring this back from the dead?
I didn't see a choice that fit my personal opinion on what ghosts are. There are several choices that fit the bill, but nothing that I could say fit better than any other.

I think several could fit. I also feel sometimes people can hold someone back from crossing over.

lol however, then, what do I see and sometimes communicate with and my niece does too and my sister and a few other family members? Hmm. This is definitely an interesting topic. I know I'm not crazy. lol But, I can see how some things are figments of people's imaginations. Ok, my grammar is reallyl bad in this message but I'm getting ready to leave for Dunmore in a few minutes.
Ok, I'm making it sound like my whole family is nuts. I just think we all have a special "gift."
Both of you have valid points though, I'm not denying that or arguing. Geesh it's so hard to convey tone in a written message.
